The Strade del vino (Wine roads) are associations of operants who promote and give value to a territory bound to wine having controlled denomination. The constitution of the Strade del vino is bound to the increase in the phenomena of wine tourism or "enotourism", where wine lovers may discover what is behind a wine and its production: the countryside, people, culture, and history. In Italy, the phenomenon is regulated by a law passed in 1999 that delegates wine tourism to the individual Regions. In September 2000, the Region Veneto passed a law that puts forth the fondamental critera for the creation of the Strade del vino. Thus, the Strada del vino was formed in the Valpolicella.
In the past, there have been, similar initiatives with the same name, but today the Strada del vino represents a completely new initiative in which all those involved have the desire to work together to valorize the entire territory. Therefore, it is no longer just a route from winery to the next, but an instrument with which to improve the economic situation as well as the social and cultural aspects involved. These comprise local administrations and businesses, cultural organizations, restaurants, and hotels. The Strada del vino is thus an organization that coordinates the promotional initiatives as well as those activities aimed towards a greater valorization of these products.
At present, the Promotion Committee of the Strada del vino is finishing up procedures that will allow the formal constitution of the Strada del vino of the Valpolicella. The president of the committee is Enrico Cascella Spinosa, vineyard manager and wine producer.
The Strada del vino operates in the entire territory in which wines of the Valpolicella are produced. Using road maps, guides, and cultural/gastronomic events, it brings tourists and other interested persons to discover the wines, foods, and artistic/natural treasures of the territory. There are about 20 different communes involved going from the Lessini Mountains to the Valadige on the west, to Verona on the south, and with Soave on the east. The provisionary offices are located at the Wine Consortium of the Valpolicella. Additional information can be obtained by writing to: a stradadelvino@valpolicella.it.
