The Wine Consortium of the Valpolicella operates in the Valpolicella, as in other zones producing wines whose denomination of origin is controlled. The Consortium is an interprofessional association that protects, promotes, and takes care of the interests of the denomination of origin. It operates in the territories of production that, to carry the denomination Valpolicella, is divided into three zones: Valpolicella Classico, Valpolicella Valpantena, and Valpolicella. Any wine producer that carries out production, transformation and commercialization of wines coming from the Valpolicella can join the organization.
The major task of the Consortium is to verify and control all the processes involved in the production of these wines. However, it also carries out other functions that are assigned to it by the legislation and the national and regional communities in wine production and collaborates with other organizations that have similar purposes. Obviously the Consortium functions in consulting, formation, and technical assistance. In order to carry out these various tasks better, the Consortium collaborates and confronts itself with other wine Consortium's and participates at the provincial, regional, and national levels.
The Wine Consortium of the Valpolicella was founded in 1970. Its first president was Dr. Boerio and its first director was Dr. Bastogi. The other presidents have been Carlo Speri, Stefano Cesari, and Giuseppe Campagnola. The current president is Emilio Pasqua, flanked by the enologist Emilio Fasoletti, who started to direct the Consortium during the 1970s when the offices were at the Chamber of Commerce in Verona. It was later transferred to San Pietro in Cariano and then to San Floriano. The present offices are at the Agrarian Consortium in via Valpolicella in San Pietro in Cariano.
There are over 1600 members of the Consortium and represent the near totality of the wine production in the Valpolicella. The members include farmers, grape producers, cooperative wineries, businessmen, as well as various industries. Beginning in 2002, the new statutes will divide the members in three categories corresponding to the various operative steps: production, transformation, and bottling. The decree of May 29 2001 gives the various consortuims new tasks and takes away the functions of promotion. It also elaborates plans for control of these products in all the various production phases, from the vineyard to bottling. Therefore, the Wine Consortium of the Valpolicella awaits a new role with the job of regulating and protecting all those involved in production of wines with controlled denomination.
